Beverly Bakke

HANSKA – Beverly Bakke, 83, of Hanska died peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12 at the Lake Hanska Lutheran Church in Hanska with Pastor Sarah Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Hanska.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Hanska and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. To sign the guest book or to leave an online condolence for the family go to

Beverly is survived by her daughters, Cindy (Rodney) Wolters of St. James and Darla (Michael) Hince of Dennison; sons, Terry Thordson of Hanska and Randy (Marggi) Thordson of Hanska; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Judy Johnston of Groton, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Telford Thordson in 1975; her second husband, Jerome Bakke in 2006; a daughter, Cheryl Grove in 2006; a brother, Leland Johnston; great-grandchild, Jasper, in 2013; her step-father, and two step-sisters.

Beverly Ann Owens was born May 13, 1930 in Mankato to Daniel and Gladys (Anderson) Owens. She moved to Hanska in 1945. On July 5, 1947, Beverly was united in marriage to Telford Thordson at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska. She was his devoted caretaker as he battled cancer before his death in 1975. On March 18, 1977 Beverly was united in marriage to Jerome Bakke at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church in Hanska. Beverly was proud to be a mother, grandmother, and homemaker and even family friends referred to her as “Ma.”

She had a great sense of humor and was always very loving and ready to put everyone else before herself. She was a wonderful caretaker and took care of her ailing grandmother as a teenager, and later cared for her mother and both of her husbands in their final days. She loved spending time with family and friends and always had cookies ready for her grandchildren. She was a member of the Lake Hanska Lutheran Church in Hanska.
