Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down
Back to school
THUMBS UP: It’s back to school for a lot of students next week. A few schools in the area have already started classes, but more students will be heading to class on Tuesday, while the rest will be starting the following week, after Labor Day.
There has been a lot of debate in recent years about when school should start. Resort owners up north have been railing against starting any earlier than Labor Day, while other critics, who see us slipping behind other countries in the number of days students are in school, think it should start a lot earlier.
We think a lot of students are about ready to resume school next week, but with weather forecasts calling for hot and humid days, we’re sure many students wish their schools would all be equipped with air conditioning.
Hang in there, kids. The crisp, cool autumn days won’t be far away.
Skate Park reopens
THUMBS UP: The New Ulm Skate Park is having a ribbon cutting ceremony today at 1 p.m. The park itself reopened earlier this week after undergoing renovations and rebuilding projects this summer.
The skate park has been a good addition for New Ulm since it opened several years ago. There were some misgivings about whether the city should get involved with that, but it has worked out very well, getting lots of great use from skaters and skateboarders who have somewhere to practice the sport they love.
River Blast coming
THUMBS UP: Riverblast is coming back to New Ulm next week. Two nights of fun and music down in Riverside Park start at 5 p.m. Friday and continue all day Saturday.
Riveblast started out as a celebration of the river, to raise consciousness about the river’s water quality, and to show that it can be a great resource for recreation. It still has informational and educational element, but more and more its the music – rock, blues, bluegrass and zydeco – that fuels the party down by the river.
It’s a good time, and it’s free. Can’t beat that!
