Volleyball round-up: Cathedral, Nicollet win season openers
New Ulm Cathedral 3, Madelia 2
MADELIA – The New Ulm Cathedral volleyball rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Madelia in five sets (18-25, 15-25, 25-19, 25-16, 15-8) in the season opener on Monday night.
Karlee Pfaff and Kristin Mohr helped Cathedral to the comeback by delivering big nights. Pfaff was 18-for-18 with two aces serving, and also added six kills and 13 digs. Mohr led the Greyhounds with 18 kills and 13 digs and also chipped in with a pair of blocks. Morgan Schabert led Cathedral with 20 set assists.
For Madelia, Carina Aguilar was 24-of-25 serving with five aces. Cinthia Sotelo led the team with 13 kills, while Taylor Thomas had 26 set assists. Katie Osborne had 12 digs and Sarah Haynes had four blocks in the loss.
Cathedral improves to 1-0 and will play at Cleveland on Tuesday. Madelia drops to 0-1 and will host CM/C on Thursday.
Nicollet 3, CM/C 1
NICOLLET – In a season-opening match for both teams, it was the Nicollet volleyball team defeating Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 24-26, 25-21, 25-14, 25-21.
Megan Hacker and Courtney Nelson combined to go 29-of-30 serving with two aces for CM/C. Karliana Kelly pitched in with 11 kills and eight blocks, while Nelson and Brianna Lund each added nine kills. Natalie Hoffbeck led the team with 16 digs, while Andrea Ochs had 16 set assists. Paige Richert added five blocks in the loss.
Nicollet improves to 1-0 with the win and will host Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Tuesday. CM/C falls to 0-1 and will play in Madelia on Thursday.
