Volleyball round-up: Area teams victorious

New Ulm Cathedral 3, Cleveland 2

CLEVELAND, Minn. – New Ulm Cathedral edged Cleveland 20-25, 28-26, 21-25, 25-14, 16-14 in a nonconference volleyball match on Tuesday.

Karlee Pfaff led the team at the service line going 23-for-23 with three aces.

Kristen Mohr led the Greyhounds offensively with 16 kills, while her sister Anna Mohr had nine kills.

Anna Mohr led the team with 16 digs. Pfaff added 14 digs.

The Mohr sisters recorded five blocks a piece to lead Cathedral.

The Greyhounds (2-0) play next Tuesday when they travel to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.

Nicollet 3, JWP 1

NICOLLET – Nicollet defeated Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 25-9, 20-25, 29-27, 25-18 in a non-conference volleyball match on Tuesday.

Emily Fischer and Mindy Poeher each had 13 kills to lead the Raiders on offense.

Nicollet was led in digs by Cassie Juberian with 10, while Fischer led the team with seven blocks.

Nicollet (2-0) plays next Thursday when it hosts Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley.

Red Rock Central 3, Wabasso 1

WABASSO – Red Rock Central defeated Wabasso 25-10, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23 in a non-conference volleyball match on Tuesday.

Olivia Bittner led RRC with 13 kills and 11 digs.

Wabasso was led by Chelsea Guetter with nine kills and 12 digs. Morgan Frank had nine kills and five blocks.

RRC (1-0) will play at Springfield on Thursday, while Wabasso (0-1) plays at Cedar Mountain/Comfrey on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye 3, Truman 1

TRUMAN – Sleepy Eye started its season off right with a 25-19, 24-26, 25-14, 25-23 win against Truman in a nonconference volleyball match.

The Indians were led offensively by Claire Krumbach with 16 kills.

Jamie Wells led the team at the service line with nine aces.

Sleepy Eye (1-0) plays again on Thursday at Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley.


Sibley East 3, GFW 2

GAYLORD – Sibley East defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in volleyball on Monday night 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 15-3).

GFW senior Morgan Wenninger eclipsed the 1,000-set mark for her career with her team-high 18 set assists. She also had six kills and was a perfect 25-for-25 serving with three aces in the loss.

Senior Erin McDurmont led the match in kills with 15, while sophomore setter Claire Leitheiser contributed 15 set assists for the Thunderbirds.

For the Wolverines, Megan Krentz led the team with 10 kills while contributing five blocks of her own.

The Wolverines put on a clinic for service aces as Karley Lind notched five, Shelby Voight got four and Katie Tuchtenhagen got one.

Sibley East (1-0) will play Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday. GFW will host New Ulm Cathedral at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 3.
