ALC gets new café tables, seats

NEW ULM – Using student activity funds, raised by collecting education rewards from companies like Kemps, Coca-Cola, Hy-Vee, and Cash Wise, the student council at River Bend Area Learning Center (ALC) was able to purchase caf tables and stools for the school’s commons area.

Boxes were unpacked and their contents set up by student council advisor Kristi Andersen-Loose just in time for the new school year.

The commons area has been gradually transformed over the past two years. With the support of staff and community, the school built a portable library and filled it with books to support a state-sponsored reading initiative piloted in 2011. The addition of some paint along with the school’s “Phoenix Pride” banner and foundations, has made the commons a place to learn, eat, and socialize before and after classes and during lunch.

“Our school is small,” said Kristi, “so it is important for our students to have a place to be when they are not in class.” Dana Miller, ALC instructor, agrees. “I wish my high school would have had something like this. I’m a little jealous.”
