Rabbits sweep Cathedral

NEW ULM – A slow start for Wabasso did not prove costly at all thanks to Morgan Frank.

After trailing for almost the entire first set, Frank notched a kill to tie the match at 22-22, another to take the lead 23-22 and a third to win the first set 25-22 for Wabasso.

Wabasso coach Barb Johnson said that second kill, which gave the Rabbits their first lead since the first point of the match, set the tone for them in their 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-16, 25-13) of New Ulm Cathedral in a Tomahawk Conference match on Tuesday night.

“It was a very good pass by whoever passed it out from the back row – she had an amazing set by the net just where I like to hit it,” Frank said. “I guess I was just right there and it felt really good.”

The Rabbits (2-1, 1-0 Tomahawk Conference) did not trail from there on out for the final two sets to win their conference opener.

The Greyhounds (2-2, 0-2 Tomahawk Conference) led by as much as 17-10 in the first set before letting the Rabbits’ athleticism catch up to them.

“We came out well, we served well, we passed well – I thought we attacked well in that first set – and then it just kind of dwindled after that,” said Cathedral coach Stef Dietz. “Wabasso’s a tough team. They’ve got some really nice hitters.”

Of Wabasso’s nice hitters, senior Chelsey Guetter was the best on this night. Guetter had a match-high 18 kills, splattering balls throughout numerous spots on the hardwood floor.

“She was unreal,” Johnson said of Guetter. “Pretty much every time she hit the ball she got a kill, or tipped the ball she got a kill.”

Guetter also added a match-high four service aces – three of which came during a 5-0 Wabasso run in the second set that gave it a 22-11 lead before Dietz called a timeout.

Frank tallied nine kills including the aforementioned big three. Karlee Eichten added five kills – including three in the third set that pulled Wabasso away from Cathedral for the win.

Jamie Goblirsch led the match with 12 digs for Wabasso, followed by Erin Liebl with 10 and Guetter with nine.

Kristin Mohr led the Greyhounds in kills with seven. MacKinnon Ehlenz and Karlee Pfaff each added three kills for Cathedral.

“We did not pass the ball well in the second set or the third set,” Dietz said. “Our communication broke down and therefore we weren’t passing the ball whether we were serve, receive or defense and that was the biggest thing.

“We couldn’t get the ball to our setter and then we couldn’t get it to our hitters.”

The Greyhounds were without sophomore Anna Mohr, who was out with a sprained ankle. Dietz said she hopes to have Mohr back in time by next week’s match against Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s.

Ehlenz tallied 10 digs for Cathedral, while Pfaff added nine and Abby Hauser added seven.

Wabasso returns to the hardwood at 7 p.m. on Monday, when it hosts Lakeview. Cathedral returns next Thursday, when it hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s.
