Thunderbirds sweep Cougars

GFW 3, CM/Comfrey 0

WINTHROP – Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop took it to Tomahawk Conference foe Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 25-15, 25-19, 25-12 in Thursday night volleyball action.

Morgan Wenninger filled up the stat sheet for the Thunderbirds as she led the team with 13 kills, 10 assists and two blocks on the night. Claire Wintheiser passed well for GFW recording 18 assists.

Andrea Ochs had 18 digs for the Cougars. Karlianna Kelly also contributed with three blocks.

GFW will next play Sept. 10 at Eden Valley/Watkins. CM/C will travel to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart next week.

Nicollet 3, GHEC/ML 2

NICOLLET – Nicollet defeated Granada-Huntley-East Chain 25-15, 21-25, 21-25, 25-15, 19-17 in Valley Conference volleyball action Thursday night.

Mindy Poehler led the Raiders with 15 kills and 15 digs while Emily Fischer and Emily Skrien each had eight kills. Julia Giefer had 26 digs and Sara Meurer had 15 set assists. Poehler and Fischer each had eight blocks.

Nicollet is at Mankato Loyola on Tuesday.

St. Mary’s 3, MLA 2

MOUNTAIN LAKE – Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Mountain Lake Area 25-16, 14-25, 18-25, 25-19, 15-13 in nonconference volleyball action Thursday.

Becca Schmitz led the Knights with 16 kills and five blocks and Deonna Brinkman had seven kills. Bethany Berkner finished with 31 set assists and Haley Neid had 12 digs.

St. Mary’s is at the Sleepy Eye Invitational on Saturday.

Springfield 3,

Sleepy Eye 2

SLEEPY EYE – Springfield defeated Sleepy Eye in five sets (25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-12) in a Tomahawk Conference match on Tuesday night.

Taylor Milbrath led the Tigers (1-1, 1-0 Tomahawk Conference) in kills with 12 and also had four aces on a 16-of-18 serving bout.

Mariah Hoyt went 26-of-29 in serving and also had a match-high 40 digs for Springfield.

Therese Roiger had 11 kills, while Sonja Fielder and Heidi Veenstra added nine and seven, respectively.

Claire Krumbach led Sleepy Eye with eight kills, followed by Josie Schieffert, who contributed seven along with two aces and three blocks.

Jaime Wells tallied a team-high 14 digs along with contributing four kills and three aces of her own.

Justine Gonzalez led the Indians (2-1, 0-1) in set assists with 16 while adding five kills, one service ace and two blocks to her statline.

Hanna Sellner had four kills, four aces and eight digs for the Indians as well.

Sleepy Eye hosts a tournament this Saturday, while Springfield plays at Westbrook-Walnut Grove at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

Cleveland 3, Madelia 1

MADELIA – Cleveland defeated Madelia in Valley Conference volleyball Cleveland 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 25-14 on Thursday night.

Katie Thompson went 16-of-17 in serves with two aces, while Sarah Haynes went 10-of-11 in serves with two aces of her own. Thompson also had a match-high 22 set assists as well.

Cinthia Sotelo led the Blackhawks (1-3, 0-1 Valley Conference) with nine kills and four ace tips, while Danielle Arndt contributed four kills and two ace tips of her own.

Thompson had a 12-point run in the Blackhawks’ only set victory in the third, leading way for the 25-20 victory to force a fourth set.

Madelia will play at the Sleepy Eye tournament this Saturday.
