New Ulm downs BEA

NEW ULM – Sometimes losing the first set in a volleyball match is not the worst thing in the world.

In this case, the New Ulm volleyball team played with more intensity and fury in the following three sets, cruising to a 24-26, 25-16, 25-22, 25-19 victory against Blue Earth Area.

The match opened up with both teams going back and forth for the duration of the opening set. New Ulm saw itself gain command late in the set, and with the score 24-22 in their favor, looked to take the opener.

However, the Bucs were not thinking along those same lines. Blue Earth Area scored the last four points to take the opener 26-24.

“Our main mistakes tonight were serving,” said New Ulm coach Lauren Hoffmann. “There were just bad mistakes that shouldn’t have happened.”

The Eagles came out flaming hot to open the second set, led especially by senior Katie Forst. Forst was all over the floor for the Eagles but gave the team a huge lift with some momentum swinging kills.

New Ulm commanded the entire set and the set was won on a Forst kill off the face off a Buccaneer.

“They wanted it,” Hoffmann said. “They knew they had made those mistakes and they corrected them and went on to play well.”

The final two sets did not come easy for New Ulm, but it was Forst, junior Alley Grejtak, and Chase Schewe making plays down the stretch for the Eagles.

In each of the last two sets, New Ulm struggled to put Blue Earth Area away. Ultimately, the Eagles won 25-22 and 25-19 to get a South Central Conference win at home.

“We’re three and two now,” said Hoffmann. “We know what we need to work on and we need to keep our energy up.”

Forst finished with 11 kills and 24 digs. Grejtak led the team with 12 kills and added 17 set assists. Ellie Schneider added 11 kills, while Tori Botten had 21 set assists and Schewe totaled 18 digs.

The Eagles improve to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the SCC. New Ulm will participate in the Farmington Tournament on Saturday with the first match against Farmington at 10 a.m.
