Clayton, Bluejays crush Eagles

NEW ULM – Adam Clayton scored four touchdowns as the high-powered Waseca Bluejays downed New Ulm 42-6 Friday night in South Central Conference football.

Clayton scored on three runs of one yard and then added a 9-yard run.

Braxton Greenwald tallied New Ulm’s lone touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard burst.

“It was not the way that we wanted it to go,” said New Ulm coach Tony Ortmann. “I was hoping to put a few more points on the board and shut them down a little bit better but in the end I am glad to see that our kids went hard.”

Waseca scored touchdowns on its first two possessions on a pair of Clayton 1-yard runs for a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

Tristan Hoy upped the Bluejays’ lead to 21-0 at halftime when be bolted in from a yard out at the 7:17 mark of the second quarter.

The Eagles took advantage of a Waseca turnover and marched from their own 31 deep into Bluejay territory.

A 17-yard run from Bryan Dewanz and a 39-yard run by Blake Piotter put the ball on the Waseca 4.

But Waseca’s defense held the Eagles out of the end zone on four plays to hold on to a 21-0 halftime lead.

“That was tough,” Ortmann said. “We thought that we had them on the quarterback follow but they shut it down.”

The Jays went to the air assault for their fourth touchdown on a 48-yard scoring pass from quarterback Thomas O’Neil to Jacob Laube for a 28-0 lead.

Clayton’s third touchdown run from a yard out made it 35-0 late in the third quarter before capping off his night midway through the final quarter on a 9-yard run.

New Ulm got on the board with 2:41 left in the game when Greenwald rambled in from seven yards out.
