Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down

‘Lose It’ needs you

THUMBS UP: We’d like to encourage more people to sign up for the “Lose It to Win It” program that Hearts Beat Back: The Heart of New Ulm program is running. It’s a free program that demands little from the participants, but offers lots of encouragement and advice on how to eat better, exercise more, and live a healthier life.

There is a good incentive for people who live or work in New Ulm to sign up, even people who might not be looking to lose a lot of weight. If the program signs up 2,500 participants by Oct. 31, the program will earn $25,000 toward a $100,000 community prize of outdoor fitness equipment and bicycle improvements.

As of Friday afternoon, the program still needed 791 more people to register to meet its goal. Signing up is simple. Just go to and click on the signup link.

Got an old bike?

THUMBS UP: If you have an old bicycle that you don’t use anymore, or that the kids have outgrown, or that needs a little repair, you might consider giving it to the New Ulm Medical Center’s “Free Bikes 4 Kidz” drive today at the New Ulm Medical Center parking lot, or at the Winthrop Clinic parking lot. The bikes will be cleaned, repaired and given to kids in need.

It’s going on today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can pick up some space in the garage while helping kids. Who could ask for more?

Planning ahead

THUMBS UP: We like the approach the District 88 Administration and School Board are taking toward future planning. Looking at the school’s needs now and in the future, at what educational excellence may be in the years ahead, and what the district can do to meet those needs is the best way to ensure they will be met efficiently.

It might be difficult to anticipate what education will be like. Technology is changing so quickly, and population trends can change, too. What federal or state government may require or provide in the years ahead is anyone’s guess. But having a plan in place is a great place to start.
