Knights sweep Scots

NEW ULM – The Martin Luther College volleyball team bounced back from a tough loss at Buena Vista College on Tuesday with a 25-16, 25-17, 27-25 sweep of nonconference opponent Macalester College.

“We just came off a rough game down in Buena Vista, and we just needed to get a spark back in us,” MLC setter Miranda Maasz said.

Maasz is coming off of her third Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Setter of the Week award after averaging 10.3 set assists per set last week. Rebecca Engelbrecht was named UMAC Offensive Player of the Week for her play last week as well. This was her fourth Player of the Week award this season.

“Being named setter of the week is such an honor, and it means even more to share the honor with Becca (Engelbrecht) this week,” Maasz said. “None of my success would be possible without Becca and every other girl on our team.”

Maasz’s strong play helped the Knights cruise to an early 2-0 lead in the match against Macalester.

Freshman Elizabeth Kogler also turned in a strong performance stepping in for injured Heather Danell. Kogler had eight kills and hit .727 in her first extensive role at home for the Knights.

“Lizzy (Kogler) did very well for us today,” Maasz said. “She has been working really hard in practice and is really adjusting to the college game very nicely.”

The Scots came out fighting in the third set determined not to let the match end after just three sets. The Knights fell behind early in the final set and found themselves trailing 12-19 late in the set. However, MacCartney Mendolla served six straight points to get the Knights back in the set, and they went on to secure the sweep with a score of 27-25.

Engelbrecht led the Knights’ offense yet again with 14 kills. Junior libero Alex Anthon led the team in digs with 17, while Maasz had 16 digs to go with her 36 set assists.

The Knights (12-9, 5-2) travel to take on North Central this Friday and Northwestern on Saturday where they will have a chance to pull even with Northwestern for second place in the UMAC.

“We have some momentum going for us right now, so we just need to show up to play ball this weekend and take care of business,” Maasz said.
