Elva Ella Nielsen was born March 21, 1919 in Eden Township, Brown County the daughter of John and Lillie (Schlieman) Zaske. She graduated from Morgan High School where she was a member of the school’s dance band. Elva was united in marriage to Glendale Waldo Nielsen on August 10, 1940 at the Zaske farm home in Eden Township. The family farmed in Brookville Township until moving to Springfield in 1969. Elva worked as a Nurse’s Aide for 11 years at St. John Lutheran Home, then as a cook at the Springfield Hospital for nine years.

She was a member of the Springfield United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, knitting, reading, fishing, baking cookies, and was very active in church activities. Elva especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Nothing made Elva happier than having guests visit at the lake, taking them fishing and afterwards cleaning and serving the catch. Of course, if she had caught the biggest one of the day it was her pleasure to tell how and where she caught it. Having learned the art of fishing from her dad, Elva made it a family tradition which is now enjoyed by all including her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Nau of Prior Lake; her son Calvin and wife Carmen of Bloomington; 5 grandchildren, Jodi (Bill) Kiefer of Atlanta, Ga., Nathan (Kerryn) Schmidt of Coffs Harbour, New South Wales in Australia, Amber (Cory) Gillett of Bloomington, Daniel Nielsen of Bloomington, and Sara Nielsen of Bloomington; and 4 great-grandchildren, Taylor and Zoe Schmidt of Coffs Harbour, New South Wales in Australia, and Alissa and Jack Kiefer of Atlanta, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Glendale in 2003; brother Elder Zaske; sister Frances Kleinschmidt; and grandson Moriah Nielsen.
