Knights sweep Crown

NEW ULM – The Martin Luther College Knights found themselves playing before a packed gym with homecoming festivities kicking off on the MLC campus Friday night. The volleyball team did not disappoint its fans as it steamrolled Crown College 25-7, 25-15, 29-27 in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference volleyball game.

“It’s pretty awesome to have such a great crowd come out and support us,” sophomore Morgan Kumbier said. “The energy it creates really gets us pumped up and excited to play.”

The Knights asserted their dominance early in the match with an 11-2 run, and only allowed seven points by Crown in the first set.

MLC continued its strong play with a 9-1 run to start the second set which Crown could not recover from and put them in a 2-0 hole.

The Knights’ large lead made it possible for every member of the team to see the floor, and 13 different Knights recorded a kill or dig in the match.

MLC found itself trailing early in the third set, but it was able to rally and finish off the sweep with extra points to remain in sole possession of third place in the UMAC.

Kumbier led the Knights’ offense with nine kills, and Heather Danell and Rebecca Engelbrecht added five kills apiece. Engelbrecht also had nine digs to lead the team.

Miranda Maasz had 21 set assists to pace the Knights’ offense.

The Knights (14-10, 7-3) play again at 11 a.m. today when they host the University of Minnesota-Morris.

“We are planning on coming out strong and playing our best volleyball, and hopefully we will come out with a win against the number one team in the conference,” Kumbier said.
