KNUJ honors three athletes
NEW ULM – The postseason honors just keep coming for Nicollet football.
Quarterback Dalton Elliott was named Offensive Player of the Year and linebacker Matt Christenson was named Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday night at the KNUJ Player of the Year Banquet, which was hosted at the Holiday Inn in New Ulm.
Dayna Comnick of Westbrook-Walnut Grove was also named the Volleyball Player of the Year, beating out numerous area players including Wabasso’s Chelsey Guetter, New Ulm Cathedral’s Kristin Mohr and BLHS’s Hannah VanderVoort for the honor.
Elliott and Christenson, both of whom helped lead Nicollet to an undefeated regular season and a state tournament berth, were selected among a group of eight and nine players each for the honor.
Among offensive players up for the award were Tanner Bock, T.J. Fulton and Neil Eichten of Wabasso, Nick Runck of Springfield and Brandon Helget of Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s.
Defensive players nominated included Ben White of Sibley East, Ryan Menssen of St. James, Riley Kerkhoff of Cedar Mountain/Comfrey, Russ Hoffman of New Ulm Cathedral, Jack Bergeman of Madelia and David Surprenant and Carter Krzmarzick of Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s.
Elliott passed for 2,872 yards off 174-of-293 passing for 37 touchdowns this season and also ran for 1,366 yards on 239 carries and 21 touchdowns.
Christenson tallied 143 total tackles (93 solo, 50 assisted) with four tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception and three fumble recoveries this season. He is the school’s all-time leader in career solo tackles (312), assisted tackles (238) and total tackles (550).
