Still time to sign up for LOSE IT to WIN IT

To the editor:

Great job, New Ulm! We now have 2,107 people registered for the LOSE IT to WIN IT community health challenge. This challenge is a wonderful opportunity for the community of New Ulm to earn a free grant award of $100,000 from New Ulm Medical Center Foundation, UnitedHealth Group and Hearts Beat Back/Heart of New Ulm Project. The $100,000 will provide outdoor fitness equipment in parks and bicycling improvements, free for everyone to use. These new amenities will help our community remain physically active long after the Heart of New Ulm Project is complete. What better way to role model an active lifestyle for the kids in our community than to have them see teens and adults getting active and having fun on the equipment in our neighborhood parks?

The New Ulm community has supported this challenge with the greatest number of participants to date in any Heart of New Ulm program, but we still need 393 more people (at least 18 yrs old and live, work or go to school in New Ulm) to register in order for the community to earn the first $25,000. For every person that registers the community earns $10 toward the equipment. It isn’t only the community that wins, but everyone who participates wins as well. Once you register, you get access to motivational messages and tips, many free tools and resources for weight loss and maintenance, as well as much-needed social support from others in our community. Plus, Hy-Vee has generously partnered to help encourage people to participate and succeed by providing Fuel Saver discount coupons. All you have to do is just weigh in once each quarter and you’ll get 25 cents off a gallon of gas with a minimum $25 purchase. If you also weigh in monthly, you’ll get a coupon for 10 cents off a gallon of gas with a minimum $10 purchase.

Do it for yourself, your family and our community. It’s FREE and there is no purchase necessary! The first step of registration is quick and easy at any one of the three kiosks located at Hy-Vee, New Ulm Medical Center and New Ulm Recreation Center. You just need your own individual e-mail address and access to a computer for the second step, which is completing a brief questionnaire.

The Recreation Center (Vogel Fieldhouse at 122 South Garden St) has a sample piece of outdoor fitness equipment – please come try it out and register for LOSE IT to WIN IT by the extended deadline of November 18.
