Eagles split season opener

NEW ULM – The first few matches are always the toughest.

New Ulm opened the 2013-14 wrestling season hosting a triangular meet, where it lost to Fairmont/Martin County West 42-32 before beating Waseca 36-31.

“That first one was back and forth, it was tough to lose it,” said New Ulm coach John Rieser, who voiced gratitude toward the fan support at the meet. “But I think the boys responded well and came back and wrestled really tough in the second dual.”

Senior heavyweight Granger Lehman had the shortest night on the mat, pinning both his opponents in less than one minute each. Lehman caught his first opponent, Fairmont/MCW’s Adrian Moscoffian, at the end of a funky scramble, proceeding to lay him out on the mat.

“I tied up with him, he was hanging hard on the head so I tried to shoot a head-outside single-leg,” Lehman said of his first match. “So I come back up and he just left the headlock sitting there so I threw it. I almost got rolled through, but I caught him in the reverse half and just worked it until he was done.”

That match was Lehman’s first since returning from a shoulder injury that kept him out for the past two seasons.

Lehman’s second pin, which came against Waseca’s Sam Sierra, won the dual meet for New Ulm (1-1, 1-1 South Central Conference), which trailed 31-30 heading into that match.

Ryan Wacker (113 pounds), Sam Hoppe (170) and Cole Wilfahrt (182) were the other Eagles who won both their matches on the night.

Hoppe’s second victory came in dramatic fashion. Waseca’s Jack Milbrett held a 4-1 lead after the first period, but Hoppe nabbed a reversal from the down position along with two back points in the second.

Trailing 6-5 in the third period, Hoppe secured a takedown of Milbrett as the buzzer sounded to secure a 7-6 victory in the 170-pound match.

After winning by fall in the first dual, Wilfahrt faced Jimmy Ebertowski in the 182-pound match. Despite the danger Ebertowski imposed, Wilfahrt notched a quick takedown out of an early scramble to gain momentum.

From there, Wilfahrt secured the 9-3 victory after a catch-and-release second period and a reversal in the third.

Jagger Hoffmann was poised to add his name to that list after pinning Fairmont/MCW’s Levi Bufler, but struggled to find his offense en route to losing to Waseca’s Tristen Hoy by 9-1 major decision at 138 pounds.

“I told him to go after it and I think he wrestled tough,” Rieser said of Hoffmann. “We’ll come back and work on a few things to change that score around next time.”

New Ulm next heads to Mankato East for a quadrangular with Hutchinson and Scott West Thursday. The duals are slated to begin at 5 p.m.

“I think we wrestled well on our feet, but I think we need to work on getting away from the guys,” Rieser said. “Especially in that first match: not getting pinned. We gave up way too many pins.”
