PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Fairmont boys defeat New Ulm

FAIRMONT – In the South Central Conference opener, the New Ulm boy’s basketball team came up short at Fairmont.
Grant Kannegeisser led the Eagles with 23 points and also grabbed six rebounds. Tanner Ogren added 21 points for New Ulm.
The Eagles drop to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. They will host Blue Earth Area on Friday.
St. Mary’s 67
SLEEPY EYE – The Springfield boys basketball held on for a tough victory in the Tomahawk Conference opener on Tuesday evening.
Springfield was led by a trio of players in scoring led by Carter Erickson with 18 points. Cooper Scheffler and Tyler Vogel added 17 points apiece in the victory.
St. Mary’s was led in scoring by Mike Hirsch with 21 points. Hirsch was joined in double figures by David Surprenant with 10.
Springfield improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference. The Tigers will travel to Mountain Lake on Thrusday. St. Mary’s drops to 0-1 overall and in conference, and will host Murray County Central on Friday.
GFW 80, MVL 66
WINTHROP – Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop picked up its first win of the season by beating Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Tuesday night.
Seth Schuette led the way for the Thunderbirds with 29 points. Jack Bussler had a big night as well with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Lee Sullivan also chipped in with 17 for GFW.
Chad Lease led MVL with a game-high 30 points. He was joined in double figures by Nate Wong with 10 points.
GFW improves to 1-2 and will play at CM/C on Friday. MVL drops to 0-2 and will play at BLHS on Friday.
