New Ulm girls fall to Sibley East
NEW ULM – One bright spot could be found in New Ulm girls basketball loss to Sibley East Thursday in a non-conference game: They shot well from the free throw line, but it still lost 38-26.
“There was a cover on the basket (tonight) – nothing would go in,” New Ulm Head Coach Dan Reinhart said.
Both teams traded baskets in the early part of the first half.
Ellie Schneider scored the first basket of the game to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Maren Miner tied the game later. Taylor Bolduan connected on a lay-up to give New Ulm a 4-2 lead.
Megan Eckberg scored on in short inside basket for a 4-4 tie. She was fouled on the play, but she missed the free throw.
Alley Grejtak dropped a two-point shot to give the Eagles a 6-4 lead.
McKayla Stumm nailed a 3-pointer to give Sibley East the lead for good at 8-6.
“We felt good about the lead,” Reinhart said.
The Wolverines went on a 8-2 run after that for an 18-8 half-time lead.
Sibley East used an aggressive defense that had either a full-court press or double-teaming New Ulm at key points on the court. It used this style throughout most of the game.
New Ulm countered with its own version of a full-court press in the second half in hopes of forcing turnovers and getting back into the game. But, the Eagles hurt themselves with its own turnovers.
The result was an 8-0 run to open the second half for Sibley East. Jessica Garza scored four of those eight points. Two points came on free throws and the other two points were scored on a lay-up on a steal.
Schneider scored most of New Ulm’s points in the second half.
Sibley East was able to score enough points down the stretch to seal its first win of the season (and win its season opener).
New Ulm was 10 for 14 from the free throw line while Sibley East was four for 21 from the line.
Schneider led the Eagles with nine points, Bolduan scored five points and Grejtak each scored five points.
McKenzie Sommers led Sibley East with nine points, Garza added seven points and Miner had six points.
“The (team’s) effort was great and we worked hard.” Good things will come,” Reinhart said.
