NEW ULM – Chelsey Guetter’s 23 points outscored the entire New Ulm Cathedral girl’s basketball team in Wabasso’s 57-21 victory on Friday night.
Cathedral coach Jeremy Drexler said his team’s defense, however, was not the problem.
“Our game plan was to just try to keep her from slashing through the lane, driving to the basket, those kinds of things because that’s her game,” Drexler said of Guetter. “For the most part, we did OK. She got a lot of offensive putbacks, knocked down a 3 or two, she’s a very good player.”
The problem for Cathedral (0-2, 0-2 Tomahawk Conference), instead, was Wabasso’s 3/4-court press defense that shut its offense down almost completely. Wabasso (3-0, 2-0) limited Cathedral to eight points in the first half in taking a 31-8 lead into halftime.
“Our girls are learning how to run it,” said Wabasso coach Neil Dolan of the defense. “Guetter up front is so big, so she adds a new dimension to that pressure.
“Defensively, I couldn’t be happier with our kids. They played really well and played hard the whole game.”
Karlee Pfaff led Cathedral in scoring with seven points, despite being held scoreless on an 0-for-4 performance in the first half. Pfaff finished 3-of-10 from the field.
Cathedral’s only lead of the game came shortly after tipoff when Leah Krzmarzick drilled a 3-pointer for a 3-2 advantage. Krzmarzick finished with five points.
Morgan Frank also added 11 points for Wabasso, including nine in the second half. Erin Liebl, Larissa Rohlik and Karlee Eichten had six points apiece for the Rabbits.
Cathedral hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday, while Wabasso returns to action at Sleepy Eye on Tuesday. Both games are scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m.
Drexler joked that the one positive that came out of Friday’s loss was that it is early in the year.
But in terms of building confidence for his players, Drexler meant it because now he gets to do just that.
“We’ve just got to learn to play strong, be aggressive and up the score,” Drexler said. “Right now, we’re just playing with a lack of confidence – girls aren’t wanting the ball when we get on the offensive end.”
