MLC defeats Central

NEW ULM – The Martin Luther College women’s basketball team was able to hold off a late rally by non-conference opponents Central College, and the Knights picked up their third win of the season by a score of 52-49.

After leading the entire game, the Knights fell behind by two points with just 1:58 remaining in the game, but senior Rebecca Engelbrecht answered quickly with two free throws to tie the game back up at 47.

“I think our composure was really great tonight,” MLC junior Alex Anthon said. “Even though we started losing we didn’t back down and we kept up the tough defense we had been playing the entire game.”

The next time down the floor, senior Brittney Gossen outraced her opponent and dished the ball to Anthon. Anton then found Faith Schroeder wide open under the basket, and Schroeder finished to regain the lead for the Knights for good.

“(Central) had been guarding us close throughout the whole entire game, so we had it in the back of our minds the whole game to go back door on them,” Anthon said.

A Central charge gave the ball back to MLC, and Anthon stepped up with two big points off a pass from Gossen to pad the Knight’s lead with 16 seconds left in the game, and the Knights held on to win the game.

Rebounding was a major issue for the Knights in the first half. Central had multiple possessions with two or more offensive rebounds, but luckily for the Knights it was not able to take advantage of the extra possessions. The Knights picked up their rebounding in the second half, however, and ended up outrebounding the Dutch for the game.

“In the locker room at halftime we said (rebounding) was the thing we really wanted to focus on because we didn’t want to give them any second shots, and we definitely came through with that,” Anthon said.

Anthon was the lone double-digit scorer for the Knights with 11. Engelbrecht added eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Knights (3-4) play on Tuesday at Luther College.
