NEW ULM – A 20-12 run by the Minnesota Valley Lutheran girl’s basketball team brought it to within two points against St. Croix Lutheran at halftime after having trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half.
But the Chargers were unable to hang with the Crusaders, falling 60-48 in the championship game of the MLC Tipoff Tournament on Saturday.
“St. Croix played some strong, tough, physical defense,” said MVL coach Dave Biedenbender. “I don’t think we’ve played against a team this year that’s been like that and I think it just took us a while to adjust to their athleticism and speed and strength.”
MVL (4-1, 2-0 Tomahawk) jumped out to a 42-40 lead after a 3-pointer by Charlotte Pfingsten with less than eight minutes remaining in the half.
However, the Crusaders (4-1, 1-0 Tri-Metro) went on a 10-3 run that lasted roughly five minutes to give them the edge and the eventual victory.
“We had a tougher time getting the open looks compared to what we were getting the night before,” Biedenbender said.
MVL returns to the court on Tuesday, when it will play at Sleepy Eye at 7:30 p.m.
“We played against a good team today from the Twin Cities that plays a physical brand of ball,” Biedenbender said. “Hopefully, we learn things from it and learn to play and be a little bit tougher. I’m hoping that that will be to our advantage as we continue on with the Tomahawk season on Tuesday at Sleepy Eye.”
