NU police issue phone scam warning involving credit cards

NEW ULM – New Ulm Police have issued a warning of a phone scam that has been making the rounds.

People in the area have reported receiving an automated voice message that tells the recipient their MasterCard or Visa Card has been locked.The automated call then instructs the recipient to enter his or her credit card number to unlock it. In the recent calls, caller identification shows the number to be restricted, unknown, or 877-277-3125.

Police warn people not to enter their credit card information, but to simply hang up, then call their financial institution or customer service department to verify the validity of the call.

The New Ulm Police Department reminds people to be vigilant in protecting their identity, including personal information and account information.
