Eagles go 0-2 in triangular

NEW ULM – Dalton Elliott was on the mat for a combined two minutes, seven seconds for the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Area wrestling team on Tuesday night.

Elliott, the Nicollet quarterback who was named the 2013 All-Journal Football Offensive Player of the Year, pinned Wabasso/Red Rock Central’s Cole Anderson in 1:02 before pinning New Ulm’s Riley Shelgren in 1:05 in the 160-pound matches of the Knights’ two dual meet victories at a triangular meet at New Ulm High School.

LC-WM Area (6-0, 1-0 Valley) defeated Wabasso/Red Rock Central 30-29 before beating New Ulm 58-12 in the latter matches of the night.

“We’re undefeated, we’ve knocked off two of the top-10 teams in the state and we’re not even at our best yet,” said Elliott, who is 8-1 at 160 pounds this season. “It’s good to know that we should hang with the top teams in the state, that’s one of our goals.”

Top-ranked Louis Sanders, who won last year’s 120-pound title for LC-WM Area, pinned Nick Altermatt before beating New Ulm’s Jagger Hoffmann 19-8 at 138 pounds. Sanders is currently the No. 1 126-pounder in Class A.

Wabasso/Red Rock Central (6-1) pounded New Ulm 50-16 in the first dual of the triangular before suffering its first loss of the season to LC-WM Area. However, W/RRC coach Brett Bartholomaus said the loss at this point in the year is not exactly a bad thing.

“Last year we didn’t lose until the section finals and, let me tell you, that’s the wrong time to lose your first dual meet,” Bartholomaus said. “Hopefully, we got this one out of the way.”

Four of the Bobcats’ five ranked wrestlers went 2-0 on the night with the only loss coming against another ranked wrestler.

In the 132-pound match of the second dual, No. 9 Derek Christians yielded two back points at the buzzer after allowing an escape and a takedown to No. 10 Levi Marsh to fall in a 7-2 decision. Christians and Marsh were tied 2-2 after each period.

“We scored a takedown 30 seconds into the match and then we don’t get any more,” Bartholomaus said. “Against good kids, we’ve got to keep scoring points.”

Alex Schroepfer, the No. 2-ranked heavyweight in Class A, earned both his victories by forfeit since both teams did not report a heavyweight.

Even though that meant a night of rest for Schroepfer, it still had some downsides.

“We don’t get to see his conditioning level, we don’t get to see what he needs to improve on or how to critique him if he doesn’t wrestle any matches,” Bartholomaus said.

The Eagles (3-5, 1-1 South Central) won just six of their 28 matches in their two losses, but there were bright spots here and there.

At 113 pounds, freshman Ryan Wacker went 2-0 with a 6-4 sudden-victory decision against Tyson Doubler before pinning Riley Bohnert in 3:08.

In the 182-pound match of the Eagles’ second dual, Cole Wilfahrt avenged a 12-6 deficit to Andrew Radke by pinning him in 4:46. Wilfahrt started from the top position in the third period and worked until he eventually got Radke on his back.

“It was back and fourth, it was one of those matches that we didn’t give up on,” said New Ulm coach John Rieser. “We gave up some reversals, nearfall points, [but] we didn’t give up. We kept fighting and put the kid on his back for the win.”

New Ulm was without its heavyweight, Granger Lehmann. Rieser said Lehmann injured his knee and will be out until after Christmas, but will possibly be returning afterward.

New Ulm hosts Waconia at 7 p.m. on Friday.
