Eagle Update: Time to take stock, give thanks

It is the time of year to take stock of our surroundings and be thankful for all that we have. I know that I am very thankful for the dedicated staff, committed parents and supportive com-

munity members. It takes all of us working together to make education a priority for our students.

One of our district goals is to build internal and external communications to establish stronger community relationships. We are making a concerted effort to meet and work with different community and business partners. On Dec. 5 we met with the New Ulm City Council to begin looking at areas we could work together on. We will keep working together to find efficiencies and opportunities that are beneficial to our community.

We invited local industry representatives to a meeting at the high school to collaborate on what our programs should look like, what students should have for skills and what we can do to work together. On Dec. 9, 20 representatives met with our high school principal, counselor, a teacher and myself. It was a good discussion and opportunity for our staff to learn about employer concerns, trends and provide a direction for our programs. Our next step is to set up meetings with other businesses and companies who represent our Agriculture, Family and Consumer Science and Business programs. Working together we can provide our students with current and relevant information about jobs and careers in the region.

We held our first of four facility task force meetings this month. Over 30 community members came to learn about District 88’s current facility arrangement, program needs and recommended space utilization. After the orientation, the group was able to spend time brainstorming ideas for the district and community. Our next steps are to consolidate recommendations, work on prioritizing needs and finding ways to meet community and school needs.

My thanks to everyone who has helped us to review our programs, discuss facilities and look at joint school and community opportunities. We are all working for the same purpose; making New Ulm a regional leader and a great place to work and live.
