Kimmels receive bluegrass award nominations
NEW ULM – Father and son bluegrass musicians, Dick and Ian Kimmel, from New Ulm, received significant 2014 bluegrass music award nominations.
The nominations were announced Dec. 21, for SPBGMA’s (Society for the Preservation of the Bluegrass Music of America) 2014 Midwest Bluegrass Awards.
Dick Kimmel was nominated for Entertainer of the Year. He has performed and recorded bluegrass music for more than 50 years and performs with his band, Dick Kimmel & Co. He is an inductee into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, the Midwest Music Hall of Fame, and the Traditional Country and Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.
Seventeen-year-old, Ian Kimmel, was nominated for Mandolin Performer of the Year. He is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who performs with Barton’s Hollow in addition to performing with his father’s band.
SPBGMA is a Missouri-based organization annually holding more than a dozen bluegrass festivals throughout the Midwest. Its 40th Annual Bluegrass Music Awards Convention will be held in Jefferson City, Mo., on January 10-12, 2014.
Only four nominees are selected in each category, which includes vocalists, instrumental musicians, recordings, and bands.
