PREP BOY’S BASKETBALL: Juniors spur Cathedral to victory

New Ulm Cathedral 49, Cleveland 47

NICOLLET – New Ulm Cathedral defeated Cleveland 49-47 in boy’s basketball at the Nicollet Tournament on Friday.

Collin Helget led the Greyhounds (2-7, 1-3 Tomahawk) with 21 points, five rebounds and three steals in the Greyhounds’ second victory on the season.

Alex Guggisberg had nine points, while Brandon Beranek added eight.

Cathedral will play Hope Academy at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Cathedral defeated Cleveland 51-36 in the B-squad game. Ryan Wesselmann had 12 points.

LC-WM 74, MVL 59

MANKATO – Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 74-59 in nonconference boy’s basketball at the Bethany Lutheran Invitational on Friday.

Chad Lease had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Nick Dewanz added 14 and eight for the Chargers (4-5, 3-1 Tomahawk). Eric Westphal also had eight points and eight rebounds.

MVL will play either Maple River or New Richland-H-E-G at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Windom Area 69,

New Ulm 58

WINDOM – Tournament host Windom Area defeated New Ulm 69-58 in a nonconference boy’s basketball game on Friday.

Grant Kannegiesser led the Eagles (2-8, 0-3 South Central) with 17 points. Four players – Tanner Ogren, Tanner Kluis, Jackson Yackley and Tyler Dittrich – each scored seven points for New Ulm.

New Ulm will play Albert Lea for third place in the tournament at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

St. James 84,

Springfield 64

ST. JAMES – Tournament host St. James defeated Springfield 84-64 in a nonconference boy’s basketball game on Friday night.

Neither team provided stats.

St. James (7-0, 3-0 South Central) will play Rockford at 6:15 p.m. Springfield (3-4, 2-1 Tomahawk) will battle Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta at 4:30 p.m. in the consolation game.

Heritage Christian 84, CM/C 35

MORGAN – Heritage Christian crushed Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 84-35 at the CM/C invitational on Friday.

Javin Larsen led the Cougars (2-6, 1-3 Tomahawk) in scoring with nine points. Brady Kerkhoff added eight points while Andrew Richter and Josh Green had six apiece.

BLHS 80, Coon Rapids 75

NORWOOD – Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart beat Coon Rapids 80-75 at the Norwood-Young America boy’s basketball tournament on Friday.

Kyle Kubesh dominated with 37 points and 13 rebounds for the Mustangs (3-4, 2-2 Tomahawk). Tate Lange added 22 points, while Sam Nelson had 10.

BLHS will play Norwood-Young America at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
