Veigel remembered as man who loved people
NEW ULM – Don Veigel was remembered Saturday as “a man who loved people.”
Veigel, whose Kaiserhoff Restaurant became a New Ulm landmark and meeting place for all, died Dec. 21 at the age of 91, after 75 years in the restaurant business in New Ulm.
“Donnie loved people, and that’s why you’re all here,” said Msgr. John Richter, celebrant at Veigel’s funeral service held at the New Ulm Cathedral.
“He loved people, he loved being around people, he loved his family, he loved Christmas,” Msgr. Richter said.
Veigel was remembered for his many contributions to the community, his support of athletics with the Kaiserhoff Classic golf tournament and the Kaiserhoff amateur baseball team. But he was also remembered for his ability to make people feel welcome and comfortable.
Msgr. Richter said Veigel was blessed with the opportunity, in his final months, to develop a closer relationship with God, and that the good he did throughout his life would be carried with him in the next life.
Family and friends gathered after the service for a reception and luncheon at the Kaiserhoff.
