Security screening at courtroom tightened

NEW ULM – Brown County District Courtroom security screening will be increased as of Thursday, when the court security position is staffed and a metal detector is operating outside the courtroom.

All persons entering the courtroom are now subject to security screening including metal detection of hand-carried items. Items prohibited in the courtroom are handbags, purses, coats, fanny packs, tote bags, backpacks, packages, food, drinks, tobacco products, lighters, matches, any weapons including pocket knives and personal protective devices such as pepper spray.

Items not allowed in the courtroom can be placed in lockers in a room across the room 310 (the main courtroom).

The only exception for those allowed to carry firearms would be law enforcement (court security, law enforcement who are witnesses and County Attorneys that are permitted per Minnesota State Statute.

Items permitted in the courtroom are a palm-sized wallet/change purse that fits in a pocket, cameras and cellphones (which must be turned off prior to entering the courtroom), required court documents and medical items needed for safety and well-being. Courtroom photography is prohibited.
