Water leak closes Lola’s
NEW ULM – Lola’s restaurant owner Lacey Lueth got an unexpected phone call early New Year’s Eve morning that probably saved her business from further damage.
“I got a call at about 12:15 a.m. from an upstairs neighbor who said they heard water running. I got an e-mail earlier but didn’t notice it right away,” Lueth said. “A pipe fitting blew off, causing water to run full blast from the second floor down into the first floor and basement. I ran around the building for a while, looking for the water valve to shut the water off.”
Moving as much milk and prepared food as she could to New Ulm Event Center freezers was among Lueth’s first priorities after shutting off the water. “We had to throw out some food that we couldn’t move to other freezers.”
A New Year’s Eve event featuring The Little Prairie Pickers originally scheduled at Lola’s was moved to The New Ulm Event Center on 20th South and reservations were honored by the business know for its sandwiches, pastas, salads, desserts and other dishes made from scratch plus varieties of coffee and tea.
On Friday, business cleaning and restoration workers removed carpet padding and glue towards the rear of the business. Lueth said basement sheet rock will be removed.
“We’ll reopen after the floor is repaired,” she said. “Construction crews are coming in to help us decide what to put on the floor. We probably won’t put re-carpet. We’re looking at refinishing what was under the carpet and padding and considering other options.”
Semblence, a woman’s clothing store located underneath Lola’s remains open. Patrons are invited to enter the store by the movie theater parking lot.
