Waseca too much for Eagles

NEW ULM – It is not that the Waseca Bluejays shot the lights out with their initial shots Friday night against the New Ulm Eagles.

But they did with their second-chance shots.

Waseca used a strong inside game that led to numerous successful second-chance points as it blasted New Ulm 83-25 in South Central Conference basketball.

Devin Williamson led Waseca (10-2, 3-1 South Central) with 18 points. Jake Busse finished with 13.

Grant Kannegiesser led New Ulm (2-10, 1-3) with five points.

“We gave up way too many second shots,” said New Ulm coach Steve Foley. “I thought that our defense was solid in the half court and they beat us down the court a few times. But we gave up way too many second shots and in my opinion that was the difference in the game.”

Waseca held an 8-4 lead early before going on a 25-5 scoring burst to take a 33-9 lead with 4:45 left in the first half.

Sixteen of the points came courtesy of the inside scoring from Williamson, Busse and Jordan Altmann as the Eagles had no answer inside – all of them on either putbacks of their own shots or a rebound of a missed teammate’s shot.

While Waseca enjoyed the inside feast, New Ulm did not.

The Eagles were one and done on their shots as they hit only 2-of-18 shots from the field in that span with a 3-pointer from Tanner Ogren for their biggest scoring stretch in the first half.

A 9-0 run by Waseca upped the lead to 42-9 with just more than two minutes left in the first half holding a comfortable 47-11 lead at halftime.

“They did not shoot the ball well in the first half,” Foley said. “It was all second-chance shots. We need to improve on rebounding.”

A 33-6 run to start the second half saw Waseca holding an 80-17 lead with 6:11 left in the game.

New Ulm hit only six of its first 33 shots in that same span.

“We had some good shots, we just did not hit,” Foley said. “Our defense played good, we just have to rebound. We did not match their physical style of play.

“I hope that the kids remember this feeling and do not want to feel it again.”
