GFW boys win shootout

GFW 94, St. Mary’s 84

WINTHROP – In a battle of 4-2 teams in the Tomahawk Conference, it was Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop getting a big home win over Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday.

The Thunderbirds had four players in double figures and were led by Seth Schuette’s 32 points. Brett VanMaasDam tallied 24 points to complement Schuette’s big night. Jack Bussler added 13 points and 14 rebounds and Lee Sullivan scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the win.

John Brandl had a huge night for the Knights by scoring 40 points. Mike Hirsch chipped in with 20 points as well for St. Mary’s.

GFW improves to 6-6 (5-2) and will play at Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Friday evening. St. Mary’s drops to 7-4 (4-3) and will play Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in Hector on Thursday.

Sleepy Eye 58, BLHS 55

HECTOR – The Sleepy Eye boy’s basketball team got a road win in Tomahawk Conference play by defeating Buffalo-Lake Hector-Stewart on Tuesday evening.

Juan Montemayor was the high scorer for the Indians with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Brandon Polesky had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Sleepy Eye.

BLHS was led by Tate Lange with 23 points and eight rebounds. Kyle Kubesh added a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

Sleepy Eye improves to 4-9 (2-5 Tomahawk) and will host Red Rock Central on Thursday. BLHS falls to 5-7 (3-4 Tomahawk) and will host St. Mary’s on Thursday.

Madelia 62, JWP 60

JANESVILLE – Madelia defeated Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in a boy’s Valley Conference basketball game Tuesday.

Madelia was led by Derrick Van Hee with 14 points. Riley Benzel had 12 points, Jack Bergeman had 11 points and Zach Baumgartner had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Madelia (6-7, 3-3) hosts Truman/Martin Luther at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
