New Ulm girls blank SCC rival Fairmont

NEW ULM – The New Ulm girl’s hockey team improved to 15-5 on the season with a 5-0 shutout over Fairmont in South Central Conference action at the New Ulm Civic Center.

The Eagles got off to a slow start but got on the board at the 9:20 mark of the first period when Erika Ries scored on an assist from Brittany Denn.

The Eagles exploded for four goals in the second period to put the game away.

Brook Schugel netted the first goal of the period unassisted at the 1:55 mark and Ashley Sandberg gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead when she scored at the 3:47 mark on an assist from Ries and Carson Reed.

Morgan Schaefer put New Ulm up 4-0 on assists from Lexie Weiss and Dani Weiss, and New Ulm scored its final goal when Denn scored on an assist from Miranda McMullen.

Bailey Landreville had 10 saves for the Eagles and Sadie Sanderfeld had 28 saves for the Cardinals (8-9). New Ulm resumes action at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts New Prague.
