NEW ULM – Alyce Fortwengler, 91, of New Ulm died Thursday at the Oak Lawn Nursing Home in Mankato.
Funeral service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, NORTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm. Visitation will be 5 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Alyce is survived by her son Roger (Deb) Fortwengler of New Ulm; grandchildren, Heather (Keith) Berndt of Shakopee and Jaime (Eric) Cichon or Phoenix, Arizona; great grandchildren, Dalton and Paige Berndt; a sister, Donna (Don) Schumacher of Wanda; sisters-in-law, Arlene Bauer, Maggie Bauer, Margaret Bauer, Florinda Richter all of New Ulm, and Mary Katherine Bauer of Sleepy Eye; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe and Anna Fortwengler of New Ulm, and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold, in 2002; brothers, James, Larry, Robert, Stanley and Linus; and by a sister, Martha.
Alyce Katherine Bauer, the daughter of Bert and Anna (Fischer) Bauer was born on October 28, 1922 on the family farm in Albin Township, Brown County. She attended country school in Albin Township. On August 20, 1944 Alyce was united in marriage to Harold Fortwengler in Texas where Harold was stationed in the military. After his service, they moved to New Ulm. Alyce had worked as an alteration lady for Spelbrink’s Clothing in New Ulm for many years. She also was a housewife and homemaker. Alyce loved to sew, work in her flower garden, bake pies and bread which were loved by all, and also finish antique furniture. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm.
