New Ulm girls clinch SCC with 4-1 win
NEW ULM – On the back end of a two-game stretch, the New Ulm girl’s hockey team wanted to make sure that it didn’t come out flat against South Central Conference opponent Waseca.
The Eagles and Bluejays matched goals in the first period, but New Ulm scored three straight after that to wrap up the SCC title with a 4-1 victory over Waseca at the New Ulm Civic Center Friday night.
Lexie Weiss scored the Eagles’ second goal at the :37 mark of the second period. That goal was the difference-maker in the end.
“We just wanted to calm down and play our game, pass it around like we know we can,” Weiss said. “I think right away we were a little tired but we got that out of us.”
New Ulm’s Julia Schaefer stopped 15 Waseca shots and Danni Dahms had 45 saves for the Bluejays.
Morgan Schaefer scored New Ulm’s first goal on an assist from Lexie Weiss and Dani Weiss at the 1:28 mark in the first period.
The Bluejays answered at the 12:01 mark, but New Ulm took over in the second and third period.
Lexie Weiss scored the second goal for New Ulm on an assist from Morgan Schaefer and Sam Guggisberg. Later, Erika Ries put New Ulm up 3-1 when she scored a power play goal on an assist from Brook Schugel.
Schugel later scored unassisted in the third period.
New Ulm will wait until Tuesday, Feb. 11 when it plays next in the Section 3A playoffs.
“We’re just going to relax this weekend and watch a few games and work hard going into the playoffs,” Weiss said.
