NEW ULM – Waseca opened the game with a 10-2 run and did not look back as it rolled over New Ulm 53-32 in South Central Conference girls’ basketball action on Thursday night.

Freshman Meleah Reinhart scored all eight of her points on three straight possesions midway through the first half to pull New Ulm within seven.

However, New Ulm could muster only two more points in the second half against a tough Waseca 1-3-1 defense.

Turnovers were also a huge issue for the Eagles as they struggled to keep possession of the basketball.

“Turnovers kind of killed us tonight,” New Ulm head coach Dan Reinhart said.

Waseca went into the locker room with a 35-12 lead.

The Eagles started the second half with an intensity which had been lacking in the first half. They managed to match Waseca basket for basket in the second half to keep the game from getting any more out of hand.

“We played a little harder in the second half, and did not turn the ball over quite as much,” Reinhart said.

Ellie Schneider led the Eagles in scoring with nine points, while Hunter Ahlness added six points. Kelsey Anderson had five points and six rebounds.

New Ulm (3-16, 2-7) plays again next Tuesday when it hosts Lake Crystal-Wellcome-Memorial.
