NEW ULM – Senior point guard Brittney Gossen scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half as the Martin Luther College women’s basketball team defeated St. Scholastica 58-52 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

Nine first-half turnovers made it hard for the Knights’ offense to get anything going, but St. Scholastica turned the ball over 17 times in the first half with seven coming off MLC steals.

Part of the Knights’ turnover problem was that Gossen was forced to sit much of the first half when she picked up two fouls less than 3 minutes into the game.

“It was very frustrating to have to sit much of the half, but sometimes it just happens,” Gossen said.

The Saints led by as much as eight in the first half, but a late run pulled the Knights within three points going into the locker room for halftime.

The Knights started the second half with a 9-0 run to immediately gain the lead.

With Gossen back in, the Knights moved the ball much more efficiently and only turned it over three times in the second half.

“We knew we had to come out and control the tempo,” Gossen said. “We came out and started making better passes and getting better shots.”

The second half went back and forth with 11 lead changes and neither team leading by more than six points.

MLC’s defense was much to thank for that as it held St. Scholastica to 27 points in the second half.

“We knew what they wanted to do on offense, so we just went out and played off them and played to our strengths,” Gossen said.

Freshman Mariah Schoof hit a 3-pointer with 6:32 left to give the Knights the lead for good.

Schoof and Leah Nass hit 5-of-6 free throws, combined, down the stretch to put the game on ice.

Gossen’s 15 points led the Knights, while Schoof and junior Alex Anthon each had 11 points.

Nass led the Knights with eight rebounds. Freshman Faith Schroeder added six rebounds.

The Knights (11-9, 8-2) return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when it hosts UW-River Falls.
