District 84 approves teachers’ 2013-15 contract

SLEEPY EYE – The District 84 Board of Education approved the 2013-15 master agreement with the Sleepy Eye Education Association on Thursday.

The two-year, 7.5 percent total package hike gives district teachers a $1,500 annual salary increase and new teachers a $400 annual raise plus $3,250 to be divided among all extra-curricular salaries for the first year of the pact. Second-year raises are $1,500 a year for teachers, a $450 annual health insurance contribution increase and raising the 403b (retirement fund) cap from $32,500 to $35,000.

The settlement was $86,726 over the district’s Fiscal Year 2014 Adopted Budget. Additional state-mandated staff development will cost the district $32,987 more than the adopted budget while 33 fewer enrolled students cost the district $132,881 in state aid.

“Declining enrollment (568 to 535) is due mostly to migrant students who don’t return,” said Superintendent John Cselovszki.

The board also approved:

A resolution discontinuing or reducing $65,278.56 in educational programs and positions including the 1.0 FTE (full-time equivalent) cultures program ($41,698.89); .64 Family and Consumer Science (FACS) $32,453.47; while increasing the art program by 20 percent to provide elementary art ($8,873.80).

Hiring Kelly Schmitz as .64 FACS long-term substitute at $9,582.98 and accepting FACS teacher Tamra Smertneck’s resignation as of Jan. 28, 2014.

Donations of $1,554.83 from the Monsanto Matching Gift Program on behalf of an anonymous donor – $500 to the second and fourth grades and $564.93 to the band boosters; $600 from the Sleepy Eye Healthcare Foundation for elementary health curriculum; $250 from the 3M Foundation on behalf of Bryan Sellner for STEM curriculum; and a $200 anonymous donation $175 to the iPad Initiative and $25 to Positive Behavior Incentive Program.
