Play Date for Pups …

NEW ULM – The City of New Ulm has its fair share of parks, but currently there is no park dedicated to Man’s Best Friend.

The Parks and Rec Department has set aside a portion of South German Park near the skate park and sliding hill for a dog park.

The park would give animal owners a chance to let their pets run free off their leases and socialize with other dogs. All that is needed is a fence, which is estimated to cost $12,000. Recently a group of dog friendly citizens have dedicated their time and money to raise the necessary funds.

Every Monday in February Pups Playland, a dog daycare facility located at 2004 N. Broadway, has hosted a “Pups Play Date.” All proceeds go o the new dog park. “We had a good showing in our first week of doing it and are looking for even more dogs to come out in the weeks ahead,” said volunteer Brent Fredin.

The play dates give dogs a chance to run around in a safe environment and interact with other canines. Most importantly, it gives dogs the chance to stretch their legs after being indoors all winter.

Play sessions are scheduled for small and big dogs.

Small dogs have the run of the facility from 6-7 p.m. The big dogs play from 7-8 p.m.

Future fund-raisers include the beer/wine tasting event on Thursday, March 20 as well as an ongoing Kick Starter drive.

With the success of the play times, Pups Playland will likely continue hosting play sessions into March. Volunteers are asking for $5 per dog, but all donations are accepted. Thus far, approximately $7,000 has been raised.
