Police use taser on suspect at Wal-Mart

NEW ULM – A 23-year-old New Ulm man remains in the Brown County Jail, facing felony violation of an Order for Protection and gross misdemeanor obstructing the legal process after police chased him and a 21-year-old New Ulm woman Saturday evening at the local Wal-Mart.

According to the complaint, New Ulm Police were at Wal-Mart investigating a theft at about 8 p.m. Saturday when they observed a male and female wearing hooded jackets with hoods up. They saw the officer, turned and walked away quickly, in a zig-zag pattern, between aisles, to avoid being followed.

Police recognized the man as Xavier L. Heeder, who had an active arrest warrant, as did the woman, Megan S. Hoffmann, 21. The officer confronted Heeder and Hoffmann before they ran away separately.

Police caught Hoffmann and were arresting her when she yelled “Xavier, help me.” Heeder stopped and ran towards an officer who drew his taser and fired it at Heeder. The taser hit him in the left arm and chest when he was 5 to 10 feet away. Hoffmann got away in the scuffle.

The officer radioed for assistance and later arrested Heeder and transported him to the New Ulm Medical Center to deal with taser probes. After Heeder was medically cleared, he was taken to jail.

A record review showed Heeder was convicted of 5th degree assault on Nov. 20, 2008 in Brown County Court and violation of an Order for Protection on Oct. 7, 2013. Both convictions are qualified domestic violence-related offenses.

Heeder’s awaits court dates to face the two charges from the New Ulm Police arrest. He also faces a failure to appear charge after he was earlier arrested by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and a felony probation violation in Nicollet County.

Hoffmann remains in the Brown County Jail, awaiting a court date after turning herself in Sunday evening. Her bail for a probation violation charge was set at $150,000.
