PREP BOY’S BASKETBALL: BLHS knocks out Cathedral

HECTOR – New Ulm Cathedral’s season came to an end in a 53-43 loss to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a Section 2A North Subsection preliminary game on Saturday.

The No. 7-seeded Mustangs (11-13, 8-8 Tomahawk) had three players score in double figures. Kyle Kubesh led the team with 13 points, while Josh Swanson scored 12 and Kyle Mellies had 10.

The Greyhounds (7-18, 3-13) were led by Collin Helget’s 13 points and 12 from Jack Schwartz.

BLHS will play at No. 2-seeded Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity on Tuesday.

Mountain Lake Area 80, St. Mary’s 63

SLEEPY EYE – Mountain Lake Area defeated Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 80-63 in a nonconference boy’s basketball game Saturday afternoon.

Mountain Lake was led by Carter Kirk who recorded 31 points and 15 rebounds. Cody Klassen had 28 points and 10 rebounds as well.

John Brandl led St. Mary’s with 18 points, Mike Hirsch and Payton Adams each had 13 points.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s hosts No. 6-seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran in the Section 2A North quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Redwood Valley 75, Yellow Medicine East 60

REDWOOD FALLS – Redwood Valley defeated Yellow Medicine East 75-60 in the Section 3AA North Subsection playoffs on Saturday.

Taquez Perkins led the Cardinals (21-5, 9-3 Southwest) with 25 points, while Thane Widmer added 13 and Sam Pendleton added 11.

Redwood Valley will host the winner of the game between BOLD and Pipestone Area on Tuesday.

Southwest United 77, Madelia 64

OKABENA – Southwest United had five players in double figures to beat No. 9-seeded Madelia 77-64 in a Section 2A South Subsection preliminary game on Saturday.

Derrick Van Hee had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Blackhawks (9-17, 6-8 Valley). He netted four 3-pointers and was 5-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Senior Jack Bergeman also added 19 points with five 3s and three assists.

Riley Benzel had seven points and seven rebounds, while Zach Baumgartner had five points and five rebounds.

St. James Area 69, Windom Area 58

ST. JAMES – St. James Area defeated Windom Area 69-58 in the first round of Section 3AA South Subsection play on Saturday.

Walker Froehling led the Saints (20-5, 6-4 South Central) with 18 points. John Olsen had 17 points, while Jordan Sandmeyer had 11 and Ryan Menson had 10.

No. 2-seed St. James will play No. 3-seeded Jackson County Central at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Windom.

Central Minn. Christian 64, Wabasso 52

MONTEVIDEO – Wabasso ended its season with a 64-52 loss to No. 3-seeded Central Minnesota Christian in the quarterfinals of the Section 3A North boy’s basketball playoffs on Saturday.

Senior Neil Eichten scored 27 points to lead the Rabbits (12-13, 6-10 Tomahawk) one last time. Tanner Bock’s final stat line included 13 points and seven rebounds.

CM/C 96, New Century Academy 19

MORGAN – No. 5-seeded Cedar Mountain/Comfrey destroyed No. 12-seeded New Century Academy (Hutchinson) 96-19 in a Section 2A North preliminary boy’s basketball game on Saturday.

Brady Kerkhoff and Dylan Hilleshiem each had 14 points for the Cougars. Javin Larsen had 13 points and 10 assists, while Riley Kerkhoff posted 11 points.

CM/C will play at No. 4-seeded Springfield on Tuesday.
