MLC women end season with loss at Morris
MORRIS – The Martin Luther College women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end Thursday night with a 66-56 loss at Minnesota-Morris in the first round of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament.
MLC came out strong, holding a 17-10 lead eight minutes into the first half as the Cougars struggled to shoot from the outside against the Knights’ zone defense.
UMM would come back to close the half, however, outscoring MLC 23-12 the rest of the half to take a 33-29 halftime edge.
The Cougars started the second half by outscoring the Knights 13-4 to build a 46-33 lead with 13 minutes to play in the game.
The Knights tried to come back, with Alex Anthon leading the offensive charge with 13 of her game-high 21 points in the second half, but they were never able to get closer than eight the rest of the way as the Cougars held on for the win.
Both teams struggled for stretches on the offensive end, with MLC shooting 30 percent from the field while holding UMM to 39.1 percent on the other end. The Cougars were able to make nine 3-pointers in the game on 30 attempts, while MLC went 5-19 from beyond the arc.
Anthon finished the game 7-of-16 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc to score her 21 points, while Brittney Gossen joined her in double figures with 10 points. Leah Nass led MLC on the glass with nine rebounds.
With the loss, MLC finished the season 13-13, while UMM moves on to the championship game of the tournament with a record of 17-9.
