One woman dies in fire
NEW ULM – A New Ulm woman has died after a fire in her apartment house at Center and Front streets on Thursday night.
The woman was identified Friday afternoon as Darcy Mary Moldan, 50. She had been rescued from her second-floor apartment and transported to the New Ulm Medical Center. She later died of her injuries, according to a New Ulm Police statment.
Four other tenants escaped the building.
The New Ulm Fire Department responded at about 9:30 p.m. to the call.
Michael Thompson and his wife Ashely and their daughter Prudence lived on the first floor. According to Fire Chief Paul Macho, another tenant in the building who had come home to find the fire knocked on their door, advised them of the fire and assisted them in leaving the building.
Smoke billowed from the building as firefighters fought to bring the fire under control in sub-zero temperatures.
Firefighters found a woman in and upstairs apartment. She was taken by ambulance to the New Ulm Medical Center and was reported in critical condition. She later died as a result of the fire.
Red Cross personnel came to the scene to provide assistance to the tenants, who were provided hotel rooms for the night.
The cause of the fire in the two-story building was not determined immediately.
The fire marshal was notified and will investigate.
The property owner was notified of the fire by law enforcement personnel.
