An early exit for Wacker
ST. PAUL – Ryan Wacker’s first state appearance was a short one.
After coming out as the aggressor in his first-round 113-pound match against Scott West’s Ben Kelvington, his plan of scoring early and often backfired as he got pinned in 3:37.
Wacker notched a takedown 30 seconds into the match for some seemingly early momentum. However, a potentially dangerous-hold call and a reversal later, Wacker found himself down 3-2 after one period.
Kelvington did not ease up in the second period, notching an escape and countering off an attack by Wacker to take a 6-2 lead that grew to 9-2 after three back points were awarded. Kelvington proceeded to pin Wacker soon after being awarded those back points.
The loss knocked Wacker in limbo, dependent upon Kelvington’s quarterfinal match against third-ranked Jake Allar of Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Kelvington lost in a 9-5 decision, which meant he assumed the consolation spot from Wacker.
Wacker was the first state qualifier for New Ulm since Luke Schmit qualified at 160 pounds in 2012.
ZASKE UPSETS 2ND-RANKED HEAVYWEIGHT
Logan Zaske’s first-round match had a main difference from Wacker’s: the outcome.
Zaske, a senior for Redwood Valley/Cedar Mountain, upset No. 2 Seamus Hunter of North Branch by pinning him in 2:42 in the first round of Class AA heavyweight.
“I was patient with him, just waited until he made mistakes and then I pounced on him,” Zaske said.
Zaske is the Cardinal’s only state qualifier and the first in three seasons.
“He’s done a great job for us,” said RV/CM coach Andrew Ourada. “In the first round, he continued his school record of pins – he has 24 on the year – so that was a big one.”
Zaske lost to returning state champion Sam Stoll from Kasson-Mantorville in 0:40 to fall to the consolation round. It was there where he lost to Mankato East’s Logan Swanson in a 9-0 major decision.
BLHS’ SCHMIDT ONTO SEMIS
Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart’s Chris Schmidt moved onto the quarterfinals wrestling at 152 pounds in Class AA.
The senior, who wrestles as part of BLHS’ co-op with Hutchinson, pinned South St. Paul’s Marcos Perez in 0:56 before pinning No. 8 Joe Weber of Fairmont/Martin County West in 1:15.
