A milestone for Munsen

NEW ULM – Minnesota Valley Lutheran junior Anna Munsen needed only seven points to reach a personal milestone Monday in the Section 2A girl’s basketball playoff game against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart.

After that, she was able to focus on the important task – helping the Chargers advance past the Mustangs.

Munsen scored her 1,000th career point with 13:05 left in the first half and finished with 29. The Chargers used their early momentum to defeat the Mustangs 53-40, ending the Mustangs’ season at 7-18.

MVL improves to 16-8 and will play Cedar Mountain/Comfrey at 6 p.m. Thursday at Mankato West.

“I was just so jacked and it really pushed me,” Munsen said. “I think it fueled my team because everyone was doing awesome.”

The Chargers rode the early momentum of Munsen, who scored 19 points in the first half to fuel the big first half. She hit a couple of free throws with about five minutes left to give MVL a 20-6 lead, but the Mustangs did close the gap somewhat, trailing by 11 on a 3-pointer late in the first half. MVL led 31-17 at the break.

Michelle Melsha led the Mustangs with 14 points. Erika Zanoth and Kiana Johnson each scored eight.

While MVL had a comfortable lead in the first half, the Mustangs came out aggressively in the second half and forced some turnovers that led to baskets. The Mustangs cut the MVL lead to 34-26 early in the second half on a basket by Melsha.

The Chargers countered witha run of their own and led 53-36 on a basket by Charlotte Pfingsten with 5:30 left in the game. It was the last basket for the Chargers in the game, but at that point the lead was too much for BLHS to overcome.

Munsen finished the game a couple of steals shy of a triple double. She had 29 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and three blocks. Pfingsten had seven points and Moldstad had five points and five rebounds. Mariah Stein finished with five assists and Alexa Alfred had eight points and four rebounds.
