Pitching carries MLC to 1st wins
FORT PIERCE, Fla. -The Martin Luther College baseball team received a pair of solid performances on the mound in a doubleheader sweep of Geneva College 4-1 and 3-1 on Monday night.
MLC 4, Geneva 1
Junior right-hander Andrew Nemmers delivered a dominating performance in a 4-1 win to give the Knights their first win of the season.
Nemmers went the distance for the Knights, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out nine. He improved his record to 1-1 on the season with the win and has now allowed only three runs in 12 innings this season.
The Knights outhit Geneva 6-2 for the game, with Matt Olson finishing with a game-high two hits. Joel Hering, Jake Ziel and James Hemmelman each drove in a run, with the Knights scoring three of their four runs in the first three innings of the game.
MLC 3, Geneva 1
First-year starting pitcher Jonathan Kock picked up where Nemmers left off, throwing a complete game three-hitter in Game 2 to lead MLC to the 3-1 win.
Kock pitched all seven innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out nine. He improved to 1-1 on the season with the win.
Tom Welch led the MLC offensive effort with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Nemmers also drove in a run.
The Knights held 1-0 lead in the second, but Geneva tied it up in the bottom half of the inning. MLC took the lead with a run in the top of the third inning, however, and added the insurance run in the fifth.
MLC improved to 2-4 on the season with the win, while Geneva fell to 0-2 in defeat.
MLC will conclude their season-opening Florida trip at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, when it plays Westminster in a doubleheader.
