Four earn KNUJ honors
NEW ULM – Four area athletes added another notch to their respective resumes on Tuesday night.
At the KNUJ Winter Player of the Year banquet in New Ulm, Zach Brandts of St. James Area was named the boy’s basketball Player of the Year, Alex Schroepfer of Wabasso/Red Rock Central was named the Wrestler of the Year and Chelsey Guetter of Wabasso and Carly Sigurdson of BOLD were named the girl’s basketball co-Players of the Year.
Brandts helped lead the turnaround of a three-win St. James team in 2012-13 to a 21-win team this season. He scored the most of all the area Players of the Week with 736 points this season and finished as St. James Area’s all-time leading scorer with 1,888 career points.
Schroepfer avenged his fifth-place state finish as a junior by going 41-0 en route to winnning the Class A state heavyweight title. He won by forfeit nine times and of his 32 matches on the mat, he went the full 6 minutes only twice.
Schroepfer was the first-ever state champion of the Wabasso/Red Rock Central co-op.
Guetter, a three-time All-Conference selection, averaged team highs in points (21.5 ppg), rebounds (12.3 rpg) and assists (3.5 apg). She was named the 2014 Tomahawk Conference Player of the Year and finished her career with 1,610 career points – second-best in school history – and 1,247 career rebounds – a school record.
