NEW ULM – Frances T. Brandel, 87, of New Ulm, died Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Friday, March 28, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Monsignor John A. Richter celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday and from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm. The Christian Mothers will pray the rosary at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Cathedral.

Frances is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and David Hoffmann of New Ulm, Gail and Leo Bromenschenkel of Janesville, Carla Brandel and Dick Schiltz of Conover, North Carolina, Maria Lisa and John Bilogan of Rhinelander, Wisconsin; sons and daughters-in-law, Joel and Diane Brandel of North Mankato, Peter and Sharon Brandel of New Ulm; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sister, Sr. M. Madeline of Willmette, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Joan Portner of Sleepy Eye, Dorothy Brandel of Cokato.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Francis W. Brandel; a daughter and son both in infancy; son-in-law, Leonard Huiras; a granddaughter and great-granddaughter; sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Charles Machtemes; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Dolores Portner, Ben and Monica Portner, Alex and Alice Portner.

Frances Theresa Portner was born on October 20, 1926 in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County to Andrew and Frances (Ries) Portner. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1944. On June 4, 1946 she was united in marriage to Francis W. Brandel at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. Frances loved to grow vegetables and flowers, make Nativity scenes out of wood with her husband, research family genealogy, write letters, cook, and bake. She was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, the Christian Mothers Society, and the St. Joseph St. Elizabeth Catholic United.
