MLC loses pair of nonconference games
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Martin Luther College softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Loras by the scores of 8-2 and 15-3 on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights (5-2) were made to pay for six errors in an 8-2 loss in the first game.
Kathryn Marquardt started the game on the mound for MLC, pitching a complete game and allowing three earned runs out of the eight total runs scored against her. She struck out four to go with nine hits allowed as she fell to 2-1 on the season in defeat.
Emily Waldek reached base four times thanks to four singles for MLC. Waldek and Emily Wessel drove in the two MLC runs, which were scored by Caitlin Seastrand and Kate Wierzbicki.
Loras (10-8) scored at least once in all five innings on the way to a 15-3 victory in the second game.
Waldek struggled on the mound, allowing 15 runs (12 earned) off 10 hits and eight walks. She fell to 1-1 on the season with the loss.
Waldek continued her solid day at the plate in Game 2 with two more hits, including a solo home run in the second inning as part of her two runs scored. Wessel also added two hits, while MacCartney Mendolla and Sara Willems each had one hit.
MLC?will play at doubleheader against Cornell at noon and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Women’s track and field
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Martin Luther College women’s track team opened its season with a third-place finish at Concordia College on Saturday.
The Knights finished third out of the three participating schools, taking home 53 total points from the meet.
In the running events, Lindsay Hughes and Emilee Koltz led the Knights with third-place finishes. Hughes finished third in the 400-meter hurdles, while Koltz took third in the 1500-meter run.
Other top finishes in the running events included a fourth place finish by Sarah Hackbarth in the 400-meter run.
In the field competitions, Miranda Loduha finished fourth in the discus throw, while Tessa Heiling and Haley Hanan took home sixth and seventh in the discus throw and javelin throw events.
Men’s track and field
MOORHEAD, Minn. -The Martin Luther College men’s track and field team opened its season with a third-place finish at Concordia College on Saturday.
MLC finished the meet with 51.5 points, giving it third place out of the three teams competing.
Matt Tessmer had the best finish on either side for MLC, taking second place in the 400-meter run with a time of 54.55.
Elsewhere in the running events, Isaac Pappenfuss took fourth in the 400-meter run, while Matthew Hatzung finished fifth in the 100-meter Dash and Grey Davis finished 10th in the 800-meter run.
In the field events, Todd Brassow took fourth place in the high jump, and William Chojnacki finished fifth in both the long jump and triple jump. Martin Loescher also had a pair of top-10 finishes in the discus throw and javelin throw.
