Drexler named Legion Gold coach
NEW ULM – Jeremy Drexler has been named the coach of New Ulm Legion Gold for this season.
“I am honored,” said Drexler, who played for New Ulm Legion Blue when he was a junior at New Ulm Cathedral. “I have some big shoes to fill and I am looking forward to having a lot of fun.”
Drexler replaces Bob Weier as Gold’s coach.
Drexler said he wants to bring the same consistencies that Weier brought.
“[That’s] being smart baseball players and respecting the game and playing hard,” Drexler said.
His style of play will depend on the players he has on the team.
“I am not afraid to let the players go up and hit but I am also not afraid to play some small ball,” Drexler said. “You need to play to your strength – are we hitting the ball well, do some hit and run or do we bunt and steal to manufacture some runs.”
He said that meshing players from three high schools “is easier now because kids know each other and there is social media.”
Drexler will be assisted by Brett Gieseke.
“I just want to continue the great job that Bob did with the program and continue the great tradition of legion baseball in New Ulm,” Weier said.
