Sofus Urberg

NEW ULM – Sofus Urberg, 73, of New Ulm, died Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor John Gabrielson officiating. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery.

Visitation will be 3-6 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, NORTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Monday.

Sofus is survived by his wife, Harriet (Stegeman) Urberg of New Ulm; his mother, Amy (Yahr) Urberg of Minneapolis; daughters, Deborah (Adam) Urberg-Little of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, Michelle (Lee Baugh) Urberg of Urbana, Illinois, and Amy L. Urberg of Minneapolis; 3 grandchildren, Joey, Lucas, Whitney; 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Amy “Patty” Guthmiller of Mandan, North Dakota; brother and sister-in-law, Martin and Kathy Urberg of Minneapolis; brother, Paul Urberg of Minneapolis; brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Carrie Urberg of Rawlins, Wyoming; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Peggy Stegeman of Acton, Massachusetts; sister-in-law, Dorothy Urberg of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Sigurd A. Urberg; brother Sigurd Urberg; brother-in-law, James Guthmiller; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harry and Lucille (Reinhart) Stegeman.

Sofus Emil Urberg was born on September 2, 1940 in Sparta, Wisconsin to Rev. Sigurd A. and Amy (Yahr) Urberg. As a child, he moved with his family to Blair, Wisconsin, Belgrade, Minnesota, and Mahnomen, Minnesota. He graduated from Mahnomen High School in 1958. He furthered his education at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa – graduating in 1960, attended Bemidji Sate College, and attended Mankato State College where he graduated in 1963 with a degree in History. He was married to Sherril Carlson in 1961. They later divorced. He was united in marriage on September 6, 1980, to Harriet Urberg in Blue Earth, Minnesota. They lived at rural Hanska, Minnesota, for a number of years and then moved to New Ulm in 1989. Sofus worked for St. Louis County Social Services as a Case Manager in Duluth, Minnesota, for the State of Minnesota as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in St. Paul, Minnesota, and for many years for the State of Minnesota as an Employment Counselor in Mankato and New Ulm, Minnesota. In 1999, he attended Riverland Technical College in Austin, Minnesota, and earned a truck driving certificate. He then went to work as a truck driver for Decker Trucking out of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and in 2000, McKimm Trucking out of Hutchinson, Minnesota. He retired in 2006. Sofus loved to go fishing, boating, vacationing at the lake “up north” with his family, working on the yard at his home, and traveling with Harriet to visit family. He also enjoyed wood working, tinkering with electric motors, working on projects with his friend – Dave Johnson, and playing music on his electric guitar. Sofus was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm, Turner Hall, and the Brown County Historical Society.

Memorials are preferred to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Turner Hall, the Brown County Historical Society, Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm, or to the donor’s choice.
